Scanning

Which camera mode should I use?

Choose the mode in the strip above the shutter:

  • Document — pages. It takes page after page on its own; tap Done when you have them all.
  • Photo — printed photographs. Use it for small prints rather than Document mode.
  • ID Card — both sides of a card on one page, at true size (TruScan Pro).
  • Passport Photo — a passport, visa or ID photo of a face.
How do I get a sharp, readable scan?
  • Light it. In dim light, set the flash button at the top of the camera to Auto or On. When the flash is off and the room is too dark, TruScan says “Too dark — turn on the flash”.
  • Hold still until the shot is taken. With multi-shot on, up to three shots of a page are merged for sharper text.
  • Fill the frame. “Move closer” means the page is too small in the picture to read.
  • If a page comes out “Blurry — hold steadier and retake”, tap Retake. If TruScan says the lens looks smudged, wipe it.
Why wasn’t the text on my page recognized?

The free version reads the text of 10 pages each calendar month. After that, a page is still scanned and saved, but its text is not read. TruScan Pro has unlimited text recognition. The usage card in Profile shows what is left of this month’s allowance.

Can I bring in a PDF or a photo I already have?

Yes. Import PDFs and pictures from Files or Photos.

Passport and ID photos

Will my photo be accepted?

TruScan measures your photo against the published specification — head size, eye line, background, dimensions — and guides you live while you take it. The issuing authority decides acceptance, and requirements change, so check the current rules of the office you are applying to. TruScan does not guarantee approval.

Official photos are never retouched, because the authorities forbid it: TruScan only crops and sizes them. “Make a headshot” creates a separate, enhanced portrait that is labelled “Not for official use”.

How do I print it or upload it?

Share the finished photo as a Print sheet, for a photo lab or kiosk, or as a Digital upload, a file sized for online forms. The digital option shows the pixel size and file size the form checks.

The free version includes 1 passport or ID photo a month; saving the same photo as a print sheet, a digital file and a copy in your library counts once. TruScan Pro is unlimited.

Privacy and security

How do I lock TruScan with Face ID?

Go to Profile → Privacy & Security and turn on Lock with Face ID (Lock with Touch ID on a device with Touch ID). Your device needs a passcode. Choose when it re-locks: immediately, or after 1, 5 or 15 minutes in the background. While the lock is on, Spotlight, Siri and Shortcuts cannot search your scans.

Whether or not the lock is on, TruScan covers its screen when you leave the app, so your scans are not shown in the app switcher.

What does Spotlight show about my scans?

With Show scans in Spotlight on (Profile → Privacy & Security), a scan is listed by its title and kind. The first three lines of its first page are added only for everyday documents — a receipt, invoice, bill, letter, contract, notes or book — that show no sign of being an ID.

IDs never show their details. They, and anything TruScan hasn’t recognized as an everyday document, are listed by kind and title only, and the title only if you typed it on this device. No image, file or full text is indexed. The index is kept on your device by iOS and is never sent to us. Turning on the app lock turns Spotlight off and empties the index.

How does library encryption work, and what is the recovery code?

If you sync your scans (sync needs sign-in and TruScan Pro), you can turn on Encrypt my library in Profile → Encryption. Your synced scans are then encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM before they are uploaded, under a key protected by a passphrase you choose. Your passphrase never leaves your device, and we have no way to reset it.

The recovery code shown when you turn encryption on is the only other way in: it opens your library on a new device if you forget the passphrase. Keep it somewhere safe. New recovery code, in the same section, makes a new code and stops the old one working.

If you forget your passphrase and lose your recovery code, nobody can recover your synced scans — not us, not Apple, not Google. The scans on your device are not affected.

Does anything I scan leave my device?

Only if you sign in and turn on cloud sync, or you enhance a photo with AI. Before the first enhancement TruScan asks for your consent, then sends only that photo to Finn Digital’s AI service (processed by fal.ai). Scanned documents are never sent for enhancement, and nothing is used to train models. TruScan has no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. The Privacy Policy lists exactly what is stored and where.

TruScan Pro and purchases

What is free, and what does TruScan Pro add?

Free: unlimited scanning, every editing tool, PDF and image export, printing, folders, search and the app lock — plus, each month, text recognition for 10 pages, 1 passport or ID photo and 1 AI photo enhancement.

Pro: unlimited text recognition and passport photos, 30 AI enhancements a month, ID Card mode, and cloud sync for your scans after you sign in.

Monthly $4.99, Annual $29.99 with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, or Lifetime $59.99 as a one-time purchase. See the Terms of Use.

How do I restore a purchase?

Open Profile → Upgrade to TruScan Pro and tap Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account that made the purchase. You don’t need to sign in to TruScan: purchases come from your Apple Account.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In TruScan, tap Profile → Manage subscription. Or on your iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions and choose TruScan Pro. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period to avoid the next renewal. Apple explains the steps in Cancel a subscription from Apple.

Deleting the app or your account does not cancel a subscription. The Lifetime purchase is not a subscription, so there is nothing to cancel.

How do I get a refund?

Apple processes all purchases and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Your data

I deleted a scan by mistake. Can I get it back?

Yes, for 30 days. Deleted scans and photos go to Recently Deleted, at the bottom of your library while something is in it. Tap an item to Restore it or Delete Now, or use Restore All or Delete All. Delete Now and Delete All cannot be undone.

For a synced scan, the copy on our servers is removed when you choose Delete Now or Delete All, or after 30 days.

How do I delete my account and my data?

Go to Profile → Account → Delete account. This removes everything TruScan keeps for you in the cloud — synced scans, their pages and photographs, and their records — and the account itself. You may need to sign in again first. The scans on your device are not touched; delete them in the app, or remove the app.

Turning sync off does not by itself delete the copy already in your account. You can also ask us to delete your data by writing to [email protected]; we verify ownership before acting and aim to respond within 30 days. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription.
